At Liberty Power, we take phishing, fraud and scam attempts on our customers seriously. Recently, we’ve seen a number of attempted phishing attacks on our employees and we have reason to believe these same phishing attempts are now targeting our customers. If you ever receive communication that you think may not be from Liberty Power, you should delete the suspicious text message or email without opening it and report it immediately.
What is Phishing?
Phishing is when scammers use email or text messages to trick you into giving them your personal information. They may try to steal your passwords, account numbers, or Social Security numbers attempting to gain access to your email, bank, or other accounts. Scammers launch thousands of phishing attacks every day — and they’re often successful.
How Do I Identify a Suspicious Email?
Phishing emails often resemble official correspondence, with similar formatting, language and graphics. However, some common tips of a suspicious email or text message are typos, grammatical mistakes, awkward language, missing words, and a suspicious email address and/or domain. The fraudulent emails and text messages might also ask you to open an attachment or click a link. They may even ask for your personal information.
What Should I Do if I Receive Scam Emails?
If you believe you have received a suspicious email or text message, do not open it and delete it immediately. Do not click on any of the links or open any attachments within the message. Do not even reply to the sender. Recipients who fall victim to these emails/text messages and click through/open attachments, risk huge data and financial loss. Instead, verify attachments with the sender directly and report it.
How Can I Protect Myself from These Attacks?
While there’s no silver bullet that will completely protect you from these malicious attacks, here are some tips to help avoid these scams:
- Learn to identify suspicious emails
- Be cautious when clinking on links/shortened links/attachments
- Change your passwords frequently and use a highly secure password
- Install antivirus and firewall software and keep it up to date
At Liberty Power, we always want to ensure the safety and well-being of our customers. Phishing scams have been a common occurrence in the digital age and therefore it’s critical to stay vigilant and follow good security practices to help reduce the likelihood of falling victim to phishing attacks. If you ever receive a phishing email or text message, delete it and report it. The information you give can help fight the scammers.
